The Birds, The Birds
The robins, the starlings and sparrows
All jostle for space in the tree
They eye up the back door all morning
All waiting and tweeting for me
As soon as I fill up the feeder
And walk away, back to the tree,
Their beady eyes follow my footsteps
Eyes narrowing, judging me
No sooner have I locked the garage
Where the bird feed and fat balls are stored
Than the starlings, the bullies, take over
And snuffle deep into their hoard
The blue tits and sparrows keep peering
And patiently waiting their go
For when they spy gaps in the melee
They thrust themselves into their foe
The pigeons keep watch from below
They eye up the fracas on high
They preen and strut wilfully slowly
Ignoring the robins nearby
The greater the bird feeder scuffle
The more the seeds fall on the grass
This manna from heaven to pigeons
Is too good a blessing to pass
While guzzling their daily refreshment
Sly menace lurks, marking its prey
No notion of imminent danger
They gaily continue their play
Stalking and hunting, advancing
She treads like a stealthy, wise tiger
Slowly she paces through grassland
A mighty and strapping sage stalker
Approaching her unwary targets
She points herself straight at the mark
She wiggles her bum at the prospect
and leaps in a wide, curving arch
She pounces and snaps at the birdies
And feathers fly into the air
But once she stops flailing around her
She notices there’s nothing there
Like a cool, Fonzie cat who had planned it
She struts on without any cares
And should you dare laugh at her efforts
You’re met with a cold, icy stare
The birds, in the meantime, have vanished
And flown away into the blue
Tomorrow’s another new chapter
For now, though, they’re out of view
